Edna

I launched the Edna™ project in September 2018, with the aim to empower victims & survivors of domestic abuse (DA) to recognise & recover from their experience in a way that is both safe and empowering.

Edna was conceived with the aim of seeking restorative justice through understanding the various people, behaviours, and systems involved in creating & breaking cycles of DA.

Designing for Vulnerable Populations

In this lecture to MRes Healthcare & Design students from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, I introduce them to Edna in the context of ‘Design for Vulnerable Populations’. We discuss themes of: Wicked Problem Solving, Ethics Processes, Autoethnography, the Double Diamond Framework, Rapid Prototyping, and ‘How Might We’ Questions to support Edn’as R&D, BETA & launch phases.

Can AI End DA?

In this online discussion I introduce NATS to Edna™, and how it has the potential to transform support for domestic abuse victims & survivors by utilising existing systems and advancing technology.

Edna’s Mutable Glossary

Edna’s Glossary is a colour & icon-coded guide that divides DA behaviours into 1 or more of the below categories to inform V&S (Victims & Survivors) of the complex mechanisms of DA, as well as, provide the UK policing & healthcare system with a resource to better understand the threat of VAWG (Violence Against Women & Girls). It is used throughout the Edna app, and is available as a downloadable PDF. In time, Edna’s Glossary will become mutable, meaning it’ll learn from users’ experiences, both in-app & via authorised reporting, and update accordingly.

The behaviours and their definitions are categorised and colour-coded to differentiate between various types. A single behaviour can represent multiple types of DA (e.g. blame-shifting can be classified as both emotional (EA) & coercive abuse (CA)). Additionally, triggering terms have been formalised to reduce harm (such as, rephrasing terms like "beating" to "physical violence").

Got a definition we’ve not included. Let us know, by sending it’s title, definition & any relevant literature / links to contact@jazzyolive.com.

Edna’s in-app Glossary acts as a guide for users’ to navigate and tailor content to their needs and sensibilities. When browsing the specific Glossary screens, users can Search, scroll, and Bookmark various behaviours, as well as Filter out certain topics. They can click to learn more about each DA type, as well as listen to audio narrations of each definition (the audio never auto-plays).

Edna™ aims to educate & empower victims & survivors by equipping them with the necessary tools to make well-informed, evidence-based decisions about their relationships.

Initial BETA concepts, predicted running costs, and future job opportunities. The stakeholder site intends to identify the problem areas, and how the Edna™ intervention can save millions of lives, and pounds!

Collaborating with Royal College of Art and Imperial College London to launch Edna™. A big thanks to all the ‘Thinker’ & ‘Expert’ participants that took part in the R&D.
